Title: THE VIS VIVA OF INTERACTION – THE LIVING FORCE OF ENERGY EXPLORED THROUGH BATTERY MANAGEMENT IN ELECTRIC CARS

Abstract
Energy and battery management is increasingly becoming an issue for people using battery driven machines and devices in order to manage everyday life. While energy is ridiculously cheap in the minority world causing people to use electrical power without thinking much about the economical implications, it is already a practical concern when being disconnected from the grid when using devices such as laptops and smartphones, or machines such as electric cars. Most of us are already concerned daily with charging the smartphone on a nightly basis and our laptops are usually connected when possible to be prepared for going “off grid”. Many have also experienced that the laptop is ‘doing something’ energy consuming when a loud noise could be heard from its internal fan. Lately we have also seen a growing market for external battery packs for use off grid. The question about how to work with energy as a factor in interaction design is interesting and we need to start to seriously account for energy in the making of interactive systems.
In my research-through-design driven work on electric cars, I have conducted explorative design experiments and studies focus on how people struggle with managing energy when driving. In short, this work has highlighted issues with driving range predictions, a need to clarify energy drainage in electric cars, difficulties of following plans due to lack of tools, potential approaches to design energy management tools in electric cars, and the need to make informed energy compromises on the road. These generally suggest a need to energy empower drivers by surfacing the inner energy mechanics to the driver through useful tool and visualisations.
In this process, I also realized interesting aspects of the dynamics of energy when using interactive systems. This has led to the articulation of Energy-Sensitive Design as a framework and approach to analyse and improve energy use in relation to the values sought for with a particular design. My proposal adds to energy design research by adding a use- and practice-based stance that focuses on the fluctuating and interactive role of energy in design, the vis viva – living force – of interaction. My aim is to reach a useful understanding of the mechanics of energy in interactive systems, which could lead to better interactive products by acknowledging that energy has a broad and profound role in interactive systems related to the values that a design seeks to provide. To make Energy-Sensitive Design useful, it pinpoints three different entities of energy use in interactive systems and accompanying ideals, namely, exergy (always needed), intergy (fluctuating -> design), and anergy (always waste).  Energy-Sensitive Design suggests identifying and addressing intergies as the core challenges for design through automation and empowerment.
