Design Methods
Beskrivning av avhandling:

The methods and processes designers use in “human-centered design” have put design on stage as a viable approach for addressing problems in areas ranging from business to social welfare (Brown 2008). With growing attention focused on design as a mode of thinking, design methods are situated for expanded use by people outside the design disciplines in order to tackle “wicked problems” (Rittel and Webber 1973) such as education and poverty. Developed over years of collaboration across design disciplines and social sciences, design methods are adaptable and flexible to the many contexts where they are used (Sanders and Stappers 2008). From drawing to dialogue, mapping to physically acting out experiences, design methods offer diverse ways for people to develop solutions based on shared insights and enable participation at a range of settings and scales.

By analyzing the tools, techniques, and processes involved in design methods it is possible to understand how they might facilitate problem solving across multiple environments (e.g. physical and digital) and at different scales (e.g. local, global). Additionally, delving into the organizational and technological structures that support current modes of social innovation may reveal opportunities to form new, accessible, and assessable types of design methods. Research on co-creation (Sanders and Stappers 2008) and models of social innovation (Murray, Caulier-Grice, and Geoff 2010) also points to the potential for holistic and inclusive design methods that address large-scale social problems. My investigation seeks to reveal the ways in which design methods can span different environments and include diverse stakeholder groups in solving social problems.
