Participatory design methods
Titel på avhandling:
A designerly approach – in place development
Beskrivning av avhandling:

My PhD project is based in Dunga Beach, a rural community and small tourism site just outside the city of Kisumu in Kenya. Due to the closeness of Lake Victoria a majority of the inhabitants have relied their income from the lake; working as fishermen, fishmongers, boat builders etc. But due to the current poor health of the lake and the decrease in fish stock, the income security in Dunga is at risk and there is a need for creation of alternative livelihoods, and the development of ecotourism products and services have been identified as an opportunity.

In the project I take a stance from the design discipline, especially participatory design. With the aim to investigate what an open-ended and intuitive and designerly approach can bring to a place development process. This is done by an active exploration of such a process, in Dunga Beach where the local community is involved in the process. The process has been held as open as possible and it has ben the context and situation in Dunga: the place, people, timing and circumstances that indicated what actions to take.
