Graphic Design in a Computational Culture: Developing Craftsmanship on a Digital Medium
Beskrivning av avhandling:

A growing number of graphic designers seek to challenge the notion of the computer being just a tool. They regard the computer as an independent expressive medium; a hyper potential platform that holds an unprecedented and vast potential for developing new forms of visual communication - granted you know how to develop your own software.

This phenomenon is commonly referred to as "creative coding" or "computational design" and has become en vogue among graphic designers with an equal flair for both design and programming. As "digital renaissance men" they use their ability to encompass multiple seemingly unrelated disciplines to produce new and novel expressions. They approach graphic design as the result of dynamic processes produced through custom made software, rather than static artefacts produced manually in proprietary third-party applications.

Standing on a threshold of a paradigm shift, the increasing influence and impact of the computer on a traditional century-old craft prompts graphic designers to rethink their role and skills to accommodate the nature of digital media.

Graphic design and programming have already converged and their synergy will only grow stronger in the time to come. The derived consequence requires transferring a pre-existing visuospatial craftsmanship into a programmatic context ruled by logic and mathematics. But how can that be done? What challenges arise, and how can they be dealt with? What is to gain and at what expense?

Anchored in design research theory and practice, my project will explore these questions in an effort to contribute new and practically applicable knowledge.
