Internat 24, Helsinki

Design, innovation, co-production

1-4 October 2012

The theme of this meeting draws on what could be called the ”design research and innovations eco system” with Helsinki as a case, which over the last two decades seems to have more or less successfully managed the infra-structuring of design research and industrial development. What are the strategies and ideas  behind Finnish design research? What are the advantages or disadvantages in relation to the Swedish or general European situation?

The more general topic of this basic course meeting will concern the relationship between design research and innovation, including also the potential critique of continuous, techno-driven innovation. How is innovation understood and dealt with from a design perspective? And how does the idea of innovation fit into participatory or collaborative forms of design-driven research and development? Why is innovation so central in contemporary research policies? Can design research play an innovative role and are there ”alternatives”?

During the meeting, plenty of time will be dedicated to group discussions, also with our Finnish colleagues. Participants should submit a short paper with a written summary of the readings of 1000-1500 words before the meeting (paper due Sep 30).

The learning outcomesfor this meeting are the following:

After the meeting the student should be able to

- give a written account of central concepts and ideas relevant to the discourse on design research and innovation;

- articulate own position in questions concerning design, innovation and co-production

THE PROGRAMME STARTS AT ARKITEKTURMUSEET IN STOCKHOLM AT 10.45 MONDAY 1ST OCTOBER! PLEASE BE ON TIME!
